The Temples or Houses

The twelve Houses, traditionally known as Temples in astrological tradition, represent distinct realms of existence, where the cosmic energies of the planets and signs manifest in tangible, material forms. The origin of the Houses lies in the ancient development of astrology, deeply intertwined with the observation of celestial cycles and their correlation to human affairs. Over time, this system evolved from Babylonian and Egyptian astrology, which influenced Greek astrology and later Roman traditions.

In its essence, the Houses symbolize various arenas of human experience, from birth, identity, relationships, and wealth to broader concerns like career, community, and spirituality. These realms or Temples are where the archetypes of the planets interact with the astrological signs, giving form to the energies that influence our lives.

The idea of the Houses as Temples reflects a sacred, ritualistic approach to astrology. Each House is a site of divine encounter, where the planetary deities, who embody unique aspects of life and nature, converge with the signs to manifest their influence in the material world. Each of the 12 Temples offers an opportunity to explore a different facet of life and witness how cosmic forces shape experiences. The planets, which represent archetypal energies, enter these Houses in a dynamic interplay, which is further colored by the signs they pass through.

The notion of a Temple invokes the idea of a sacred space, much like the ancient temples built to honor gods and goddesses. In these spaces, devotees would seek connection with divine forces, offering rituals and prayers in exchange for guidance, protection, and insight. In astrology, the Temples of the Houses serve a similar function. Each House is a space for the native to experience the manifestation of particular energies, where the interplay of cosmic forces impacts life’s narrative in profound ways.

Historically, the origin of the Houses can be traced back to the ancient practice of dividing the sky into sections based on the rising point of the horizon (the Ascendant) and the position of the Sun and Moon. The concept of dividing the celestial sphere into these twelve sections arose in the Hellenistic period, when the Greeks and Egyptians integrated various astrological systems to craft the zodiacal model that we use today, but it may well have had even more ancient roots in tablets and scrolls that the winds of time have turned to dust. These early systems associated each House with specific life themes, drawing upon mythological and philosophical traditions that linked the cosmos with human life on Earth.

The Houses evolved from a purely observational model into one that incorporated personal, psychological, and spiritual dimensions. Over centuries, their meanings deepened, becoming rich with symbolism but in the process also becoming greatly conflated with sign meanings, warping the original meaning of all Houses but some Houses more than others. Cultural shifts also caused the meanings of Houses to change, for example the 10th House was the traditional place of marriage, since this greatly affected ones status and public reputation, but as cultural attirtudes shifted and women gained more recognition outside of who they married, the attribution of marriage partners moved to the 7th House. In addition, several systems of House creation exist, many with ancient pedigrees, so there is no firm consensus among astrologers as to which House system is most effective. and many ongoing arguments about what seems to me to be a situation governed more by fashions than by logical reasoning. Some astrologers abandon Houses or de-emphasise them as a result of all this diversity, and it has been a weak point in the system forever, but all agree there is no denying the power of the 4 angles, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th house cusps.

While the Houses themselves represent the “temples” of existence, it is the planets and signs that imbue each temple with its unique essence. The planets, which travel through the signs and enter the Temples, are the gods and goddesses who embody different aspects of existence—Mars for action and desire, Venus for love and harmony, Jupiter for expansion and growth, and so on. Their movement through the Houses reveals how different life circumstances, challenges, and opportunities unfold, offering an intricate map of human existence. The twelve signs, each with its distinct qualities, further shape the nature of the planets as they enter these Temples, adding an additional layer of meaning and nuance.

In this way, the Houses as Temples serve as sacred locations where the divine forces of the planets and signs converge with earthly experience, helping us understand the complex interaction between the celestial and the material. The study of the Houses offers a pathway to explore how we relate to our environment, others, and the unfolding journey of life, helping us understand our place in the cosmic order. As we walk through these Temples, we encounter the various gods and the divine forces that shape our world, revealing both the spiritual and material dimensions of existence.
